How to get your local business found on ChatGPT

By Pip · Updated October 20, 2026

To improve your chances of appearing in ChatGPT search, publish clear information about your services and location, keep business profiles accurate and make your website accessible to search crawlers. Test realistic customer questions and measure mentions separately from visits and inquiries. No business can guarantee inclusion.

2. Answer those needs on your website

A visitor should be able to tell what you do, where you work and whether you can help them. Give each important service a useful page when there is enough distinct information to explain.

For a grooming business, describe the appointment process, experience with anxious dogs, Saturday availability, price factors and booking options. Only publish claims you can support.

Illustrative content improvement

Vague: “Quality grooming for every dog.”

More useful: “Dog grooming in Riverside. Ask about a quieter appointment for an anxious dog. Saturday appointments are available by reservation. Request a quote based on your dog’s size, coat and service.”

This is a writing example, not a real business or a measured result. Use these details only if they are true.

Put essential information in readable text. Add original photos and straightforward answers to common questions. Avoid copying the same page for multiple cities.

3. Correct your profiles and listings

Compare your website with your Google Business Profile and relevant industry or local directories. Check the business name, contact details, location or service area, services and opening hours.

If one profile says Saturday appointments are available and another says you are closed, resolve the mismatch. Select directories that customers in your industry would actually use. Listing your business everywhere is not a substitute for accurate, useful information.

4. Check that search tools can access your pages

Ask your website provider to check that service pages load successfully, are linked from your website and are not accidentally blocked from indexing or crawling.

OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its crawler for ChatGPT search. Its controls are separate from GPTBot, which relates to model training. Review crawler access with your website provider; allowing a crawler does not guarantee a recommendation. Read OpenAI’s crawler documentation.

Google says its AI search features rely on the foundations of SEO, including helpful content and technical eligibility. There is no special AI schema or text file required for inclusion. Read Google’s guidance.

5. Measure mentions, visits and inquiries

Repeat a consistent set of questions over time. AI answers can vary with the prompt, location and conversation context, so one response is not a permanent ranking.

MeasureWhat to record
VisibilityDoes your business appear? Are its details correct? Which sources are cited?
Website visitsWhich visits are attributed to AI tools or tagged marketing links?
Business inquiriesHow many successful form submissions, calls or bookings follow?

Keep the prompt, tool, date and outcome together. Compare like-for-like checks. A mention is not a visit, and a visit is not a customer. Missing referral information also means analytics will not identify every AI-driven visit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No. Clear content and accessible pages can improve the information available about your business, but you do not control whether an AI tool selects or recommends it.

Do I need a special AI file or special schema?

Google says no special AI text file or schema is required for its AI search features. Accurate structured data can describe your content, but it is not a shortcut to recommendations.

How long does improving visibility take?

There is no fixed timeline. Publishing a change does not mean search systems will immediately discover or use it. Repeat your checks over time instead of judging the work from one answer.
